Late yesterday, Google announced at their Japan Atmosphere event and blog two new products that answer significant pains in the Google Apps suite. The first was a “totally rebuilt Google Sites” and the second was a new universal search for the Google Apps platform.
The Google Sites refresh has been long overdue since there has been concern that Google had effectively abandoned the product. The current version doesn’t allow for a responsive design and it’s customization capabilities are quite limited.
Google also announced a new product which we can only assume is the much awaited replacement for the Google Search Appliance. Earlier this year, Google announced to customers in an email that it was discontinuing the Google Search Appliance. So this product delivered at a major event is assumed to be the offered replacement to the Google Search Appliance.
While the news wires are lighting up regarding these new products and the news simply repeats what is in the blog post, there is literally no actual evidence that the products are released, what the features are and etc. A Google Premier Partner Perficent seems to be left out of the product roadmap as would be most of the customers of Google. (note: MC+A has not been briefed either regarding this product announcement)
What we can tell from the screenshot associated with the blog regarding is:
- It searches across your Gmail/Drive/Sites and three dot content
- It provides a document preview of slides and attachments
- Provides Google Now cards
I’m still waiting for access to Google Spaces so I can only image when we’ll be able to access Springboard. I also don’t know if this is something that is going to be an additional app or if it’s going to be included in Google Apps. I guess I will find out when you all do. When I do, I’ll provide a further indepth analysis.
We have been granted access to the new Google Sites! Waiting for it to be provisioned to test out. Still have not heard anything from Google regarding Springboard.
